The Power of PR
Public Relations is often seen as a tool for brand visibility and promotion, but it holds a deeper, transformative potential—one that drives social change and public awareness on issues that matter most. A recent example highlights how PR, when used effectively, can bring critical issues into the spotlight and inspire action.
Earlier this year, IIT Mandi and IIT Jammu conducted an in-depth study on the groundwater quality in the Baddi-Barotiwala region of Himachal Pradesh. Using advanced chemical hydrology techniques, the study analyzed groundwater samples to detect contaminants and assess health risks. The findings were alarming: significant levels of geogenic uranium and industrial pollutants like lead, zinc, cobalt, nickel, and chromium were discovered, posing severe health risks.
To amplify this important research, a press release was crafted to inform the public and relevant authorities about the study’s findings. The release quickly gained traction, being picked up by major news outlets and shared widely across both print and digital platforms. The public response was swift and significant, on the hidden dangers posed by local groundwater, previously believed to be safe.
The impact didn’t stop there. Community leaders and key stakeholders began voicing concerns over the findings to take immediate action to protect community health, bringing the issue into the public eye and making it a priority for regional authorities.
The Himachal Pradesh High Court, prompted by public concern and media coverage, reviewed the study and directed the State Pollution Control Board and other authorities to propose a concrete plan to address the contamination. Legal action was pursued to ensure that the groundwater safety issues would not be ignored and that protective measures would be implemented.
As Professor Deepak Swami, Associate Professor at IIT Mandi, stated, “Media outreach has significantly changed the perception of common people and stakeholders and made them understand the importance of our research on groundwater contamination. The long-pending underlying issue regained the momentum it needed to reach the public and policymakers. By bringing our findings to light, the media reports have converted a complicated research article into a simplified read, which provided a substantial base to rethink sustainable development and drive urgent policy action on the ground. It truly showcased the power of PR to bridge science and social change.”
At its best, PR has the ability to turn research into impact, taking knowledge out of laboratories and into communities, sparking the kinds of conversations and actions that drive change.
